Overview

Responsible for the preparation of well balanced meals for all youth in residence and maintaining the kitchen and dining areas in a clean, safe and functional manner meeting all regulatory guidelines.  Prepare menus in accordance with sound and contemporary principles of nutrition and all relevant government guidelines. Responsible for maintaining an inventory of food supplies, kitchen supplies, equipment, and to purchase needed items when directed to do so.

Responsibilities

 

  • Prepare wholesome, balanced meals for youth in care; prepare special diet meals when authorized or ordered by physician, dietician, or nutritionist; assure compliance with all physicians’ orders and known allergies
  • Prepare menus in accordance with sound and contemporary principles of nutrition; select foods and preparation techniques/recipes that are both healthy and appealing; at direction of supervisor, secure feedback from staff/residents as part of planning menus; create a warm, welcoming environment as much as possible within constraints of facility and budget  
  • Order and purchase food in accordance with agency budget from vendors offering greatest value for the dollar
  • Assure the kitchen, storage areas, kitchen equipment, refrigeration equipment etc., are maintained in a clean, safe and functional condition as required by Health Department and other guidelines; report needed repairs to the appropriate personnel
  • Follow center procedures in the preparations, storage, and inventory of food and equipment; leave the kitchen in a clean condition at shift end
  • Supervise and instruct youth during their kitchen duties and meal times /clean up as assigned; maintain supervision of residents assigned to work in kitchen in accordance with agency procedures              
  • Maintain inventory of food and daily knife/fork counts and other security procedures
  • Record the number of meals served at each meal for purposes of reporting to the School Lunch Program
  • Assist with planning and preparation of special events for outside groups and special occasions

 

               

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D
  • Three (3) years experience in food services
  • Access to a personal vehicle with liability insurance for work use at all times
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Possess a Health Department Food Handling Certificate or Safe Serve Certification
  • Meet and maintain other certifications or requirements as necessary for the position
